As many of you have no doubt noticed, we have introduced an Items tab on each campaign. This has been a long requested item, and I thought I’d explain why it’s taken so long, and where it’s going.
When I originally architected Obsidian Portal, I imagined that people would be storing and sharing characters, items, spells, locations, and all kinds of RPG-related data. I tried to create the ultimate generic data model that would hold all these things, and characters and items were the first implementations of that.
After using it for a while, I’ve come to realize that characters and items are fundamentally different in how they are used and even if they are used. For example, characters are a core component of every RPG. Items are a component of some, but not others. There are many systems that specifically try to avoid the “We loot the bodies” mentality that pervades D&D. Having played some of these games now, I can see why an Items list isn’t exactly necessary, like a characters tab is.
On the flip side, for games where looting is a central aspect, a raw list of items isn’t much help. Instead, you need something more like a spreadsheet, where you can easily track the items along with their quantity, perhaps the assessed value, plus a bag for currency. In many ways, it needs to resemble a computer RPG inventory screen much more than a raw list of items.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the time right now to give the Items tab the attention it needs, so we have to put it out as-is. We wanted to modify the top navigation to remove the Items and Characters links (which are pretty useless now that we have search), and that would have pretty much orphaned Items forever. So, that’s where we are today.
But! We’ve got plans for the Items tab to make it closer to what it needs to be. As I said, imagine an inventory screen or basic spreadsheet and you’ve got a pretty good idea. We’re not sure when we’ll get a chance to work on it, but it’s on our list.

Obsidian Portal is the award winning Online Campaign Management System for tabletop role-playing games. It’s free to use, it can be accessed from any web browser and it's built from the ground up for gamers by gamers.
We host a huge community of tabletop RPG players who are all looking to get the most out of their tabletop gaming experience. You play your campaign and we help you manage it. It’s that simple.
I look forward to getting a set of tab toggles so I can turn off the things I don’t use in my ever expanding tab list. Adventure Log and now Items primarily. Since the tab bar hasn’t pushed onto a second line it doesn’t really bother me… but if you guys keep adding features we might need to talk.

I really appreciate just having a separate place to store my items, even if it’s still a work in progress. Looking forward to see it improved over time; thanks

It’s interesting hear someone want the option to remove tabs. From one angle, I certainly understand the general desire for customization. However, my personal design asthetic leads me to view the empty space on the right of the tabs list as “unused potential” or even wasted space. When I’ve designed character sheets (for published games as well as home-brewed systems) I always try to make sure I evenly fill every corner of only one page. Some of my players give complements on design structures while others have complained there’s no space for a drawing or not enough space for notes. I think in the end it comes down personal preference, but the answer to that is, obviously, customization. So while I personally would invite the addition of as many tabs as they can fit on one line, ultimately I have to agree that the option to edit the tabs list is good idea. The other way to go would be to pre-construct unique campaign pages according to various systems, but that seems like it would be a much heavier programming load for your developers to essentially achieve the same effect.

I love the new item tab and I understand it is a work in progress. I have just one request. Please add the image update option just like the character tab. I want to upload my own image of the item. Right now I just see a link to AvatarArt.
Thanks

Ooops My bad. For some reason I missed the image upload link at the bottom the first time. Ignore my request.

w00t! This sounds awesome! I’ll check it out later tonight when I get home from work.

Diggin’ it.
This is definitely appreciated, tracking items has been tough so far. If you bury them in the character’s profile to show ownership, a DM can’t easily see a master list of all items. But if instead you put them in the wiki you have to maintain an ever growing unsortable table to keep track of who they belong to.
For me, all you have to do is add the full tag sorting system to the Items page and I’ll be set. I could then tag items with character names, allowing me to drill down on just items that one character has, or see a master list of all. Looking forward to your changes, thanks for the hard work.
Adding the items to the campaign backup download would be appreciated too
The items tab is very beneficial when I need to tell a story about how an interesting item was acquired or what it looks like to my fellow adveturers. Thanks and kep up the good work.
I have yet to use this feature, but from what I can see even in its infant stages this tool will have limitless uses to me. Thank you guys so much and keep up the fantastic work. I love this site.

Yay! You know, “Monsters” or “Creatures” could be implemented in much the same way… and since mine is a horror campaign, I’d pretty much profit from that!
…just saying.

Having just gotten back from playing a 2e D&D game involving items and obsidian portal, I thought I”d throw in my two cents. (Or more.)
1. I love having icons that are not just blank people. Sadly, I am a terrible artist so I get a lot of those blank portraits. The change for items is nice.
2. Characters in our game do not always know what items they have picked up. For instance, let’s say the DM says we picked up a fancy sword and the wizard detects magic on it. Well, we know it’s magic – but not much else about it. It could be Frostmourne the Worldclefter, or it could be Short Sword + 2. However, when creating the item, either the DM gives away the actual name of the object OR uses a hard to remember code OR gives it a name like ‘sword,’ that could eventually be forgotten. Another example is we picked up a magical skull a while back and I created the item today… and called it the Skull of So and So -> Because signs are pointing to that! But it might not be.

I’d like a link tab on the wiki pages to help connect a given item to the narrative, like you have with characters and “pages”. As it is now, item descriptions don’t count the same as pages. I am particularly interested in this kind of function because I run an investigation game (Call of Cthulhu) and it’s great to make up item entries for clues or bits of evidence to keep players on track with their discoveries (no always easy.) That’s my two cents. Thanks!
ditto to chad. I’m trying to speed up my game by putting more stuff on OP and less in an accordion file folder.
I need to be able to link to items from the adventure log and from the wiki. should be easy right?

Fantastic. Im running a star wars saga edition game, and this is a great pace to put the group vehicle (starship) GM only items would be nice too, so i could create something epic, and then find a way to work it in later. LOVE THE SITE!!!

if it is made more convenient cool and a spreadsheet would be good but i like being able to have a page for an item, i use it for special items with intricate effects and back-story where i can make it more in depth with pics and stuff, i hope the eventual changes don’t ruin all the effort some of us have put into some of our items =/

What would be nice is a way to attach Items to a specific Campaign without having to completely recreate them. So far I cannot find a way to do that for Items created prior to the Campaign Items Tab.

I like the sound of this so far. What I think would be nice is if there was a Database with all the generic items already listed and made. With all their stats, images, etc. This would make it much easier for creating your lists of items when you need a quick loot table. Also, Tags would be nice here that you can link to a character profile or to just the campaign in general for unattained loot. Again, I like the idea behind where this is going. Hope it all works out.
In regards to the items tab, I think your idea of a spreadsheet for tracking stuff is a good idea, but how about item listings for items specific to your campaign setting? This would be for a listing of important, well-known or available items. What do you think?
I like the Items tab.
I like the way it allows me to put information about items out there without making it front and centre to the whole group at once — which would have them all scrabbling over it with unrealistic suddenness.
I like the Secret GM info space, which is particularly useful when Items are homebrewed instead of out of a rulebook.
I like the way it reminds players that things might have a Back Story. The details remain in the Secret GM Info space until the players learn it.
My group sometimes manages to have more than one person with the same item written on their character sheets! _If_ a group has a laptop at the gaming table, Obsidi _could_ be used as the ultimate arbiter of who’s got what (for those not using e.g. D&D 4e’s physical Item cards).
As a new user of Obsidian Portal who is using it for an earthdawn game it is really good to see this section available as even ordinary Magic items will have a history to them which players will need to know and uncover in order to use the item. The fluff is vital to gaining access to the crunch!
I can see why some DMs won’t use this feature. However, it is quite useful as it is for those who would have significant or even unique items and/or artifacts in their game, or even just custom items with important qualities or histories. While I suppose this use could be rolled into the Wiki with the item being tagged as such (e.g. “item”, “artifact”, “weapon”, etc.), the setup as it stands lends a form and organization that is already helpful. I would agree that some kind of inventory list would also be helpful; perhaps that should be a separate tab? Alternatively, perhaps the Wiki could have sub tabs for characters, locations, items, misc., etc.

Please add to the list of categories – coins/money and gems
Being a newbie to this site and trying my hand at DMing via this medium, I’m coming to like it more and more. The items tab is a great asset to the D&D 3.5 campaign I will be running because one of the central themes will be questing for certain items of interest for a mysterious organization.
I feel there is a lot of potential for this particular tab and would love to see a spreadsheet-like application with sub-pages that can easily be searched and even linked to.
Would it be possible to simply use OP as a file locker in the items & characters tabs? Seems less labor-intensive for site admins, though admittedly I don’t know what goes into that.
Ex: If I maintain a txt or Excel file of all the party’s items, I could upload in seconds and anyone could d/l & see. Same for the character sheets. Entering (and then updating) the info into OP’s character sheet interface is tedious, but if we could simply upload a pdf of our in-game sheets, it would save a lot of time.
I’ve often thought the ability to upload files would be a great timesaver in some instances.
I like that you can do more with the items. Being able to put more then a simple list just makes sense to me. Though perhaps having a way to tag and what not so we can easily sort through the items would be a great idea. Then again I’m less the type to be “Oh you find this much gold, weapons, armor …blah blah blah.” and more the type to give my character’s wealth in items that they can choose to keep based on character personality or attempt to hawk at the next convenient moment to get the gold.
Heck I even throw some worthless items that just have some interesting flare like a worthless pewter coin etched with a design. The thing has no use what so ever, but because its neat one of my characters is determined not to part with it. Then again, perhaps there is more then meets the eye with the coin. I suppose as they figure it out, the item will get more details on its page. >=D
Why are almost all of the comments here stated twice?
Likely a blog migration duplication issue.
